In the early morning hours of June 8, 2024, the life of a young woman, Latia Wilson, was tragically cut short in Greenville, Mississippi. The 26-year-old Black female was found lying on the ground in the 200 block of Utah Street with a single gunshot wound to her side. Officers had been dispatched to the area around 2 a.m. following reports of shots being fired. Despite the immediate response, Wilson succumbed to her injuries.
The Greenville Police Department swiftly launched a homicide investigation, which was described as the city's third of the year. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of a suspect. Investigators named 27-year-old Tyredius Woods of Indianola as the individual wanted in connection with Wilson's death. A warrant for his arrest was issued, charging him with first-degree murder.
For nearly three weeks, Woods remained at large. The search for him extended beyond Mississippi, culminating in his apprehension near Memphis, Tennessee. On July 1, 2024, Woods was taken into custody by the Shelby County Sheriff's Department. His arrest marked a significant development in the case, bringing a sense of relief to a community shaken by the violent loss of a young life. Following his capture, Woods was detained and awaited extradition back to Washington County, Mississippi, to face the murder charge.
