On a Saturday morning in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, what began as a domestic dispute escalated into a tragic act of violence that claimed the life of 36-year-old Zikoya Johnson Echols, a Black/African American nurse and mother of two. The events of October 26, 2024, culminated in her husband, Kenrod Cartez Echols, facing charges for her murder. The incident was reportedly triggered by Kenrod's jealousy after seeing a video of his wife dancing with another man. This led to a heated argument where he allegedly demanded her phone. When she refused, the confrontation turned violent.
In a fit of rage, Kenrod Echols is accused of shooting his wife in the abdomen. Despite her severe injury, Zikoya Johnson Echols managed to get into her car in a desperate attempt to drive herself to the hospital. Her strength, however, eventually gave way to the overwhelming blood loss, causing her to lose control of the vehicle. Around 10 a.m., Hattiesburg Police responded to a call about a car that had crashed into a building on Park Place Avenue. First responders found her unresponsive inside the vehicle. Initially appearing to be a car accident, the true nature of the tragedy was soon revealed when a gunshot wound was discovered. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shortly after the incident, 50-year-old Kenrod Cartez Echols contacted the authorities and confessed to his involvement in the shooting. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and malicious mischief. He was booked into the Forrest County Jail. During his arraignment, he pleaded not guilty to the charges. The community was left in shock by the death of the beloved nurse, whose life was cut short in an act of domestic violence. The case against her husband is pending trial.
