Jamil Thornton, a 17-year-old male, tragically lost his life in a violent encounter on January 2, 2023, in Detroit, Michigan. The incident, which unfolded on the city's east side, also resulted in the death of his 26-year-old brother, Daniel Berry. The two brothers were fatally shot inside their home located on Bewick and Charlevoix following a family argument.
The gunman was identified by police as the victims' 29-year-old cousin.
After shooting his two cousins, the suspect fled the scene. A witness reported that the gunman also fired shots at another house on Bewick, but fortunately, no one there was injured. The family was reportedly already in a state of mourning due to the recent death of another relative, compounding the tragedy of this event.
Following the shootings, law enforcement was able to track the suspect to Chandler Park, which is located a couple of miles from the scene of the crime. Upon locating him, police discovered that the cousin had taken his own life with a fatal gunshot wound. The investigation concluded that the incident was a double murder-suicide, leaving a family devastated by the loss of three of its members in a single day.
