On the evening of June 4, 2023, a violent encounter in Ann Arbor, Michigan, tragically ended the life of 24-year-old Donrell Savontay Patrick Canda. An African American male, Canda was walking towards his residence on Sandalwood Circle when he was confronted by an acquaintance, 22-year-old Sekou Conde. The confrontation escalated quickly as Conde opened fire, striking Canda multiple times.
Despite his injuries, Canda managed to enter his home, where his 23-year-old girlfriend and their 3-year-old son were present. In a horrifying turn of events, Conde pursued Canda into the home and continued to shoot, inflicting fatal wounds in front of his family. Canda succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His girlfriend and young son were not physically harmed but were witnesses to the traumatic event. Shortly after the shooting, law enforcement apprehended Conde in a nearby parking lot without incident.
The subsequent investigation revealed that the two men knew each other, and the motive for the brutal slaying was believed to be a dispute over a music album they had collaborated on. According to testimony, Canda had removed Conde's contributions from the recording, which allegedly led to the fatal confrontation. During his trial, Conde's defense argued a case of mistaken identity, but the evidence presented by the prosecution painted a clear picture of a deliberate and violent act.
In February 2025, a jury found Sekou Conde guilty of first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder, and first-degree home invasion, in addition to two counts of possession of a firearm during a felony. In April of the same year, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The courtroom was filled with emotion during the sentencing as family members of Donrell Canda expressed their profound loss and grief.
