In the summer of 2023, the life of 19-year-old Ryan Clemons was cut tragically short. A Black male from Saginaw, Michigan, Ryan was known for a smile that could light up any room and a loyal, kindhearted nature. He was a recent graduate of Saginaw High School, class of 2022, and was remembered as a protector and a giver with a big personality. After graduation, he chose to stay in his hometown, working at various jobs including Cracker Barrel, Zehnder's, and most recently, Nexteer, while he considered his future educational path. He was the cherished son of Thomasine Nickleberry and Charles R. Clemons.
On the evening of June 24, 2023, Ryan was one of approximately 500 people who gathered for a large, unauthorized street party known as 'Freaknik 23' near the area of Johnson and Fourth Streets in Saginaw. Despite law enforcement's attempts to disperse the crowd throughout the evening, the gathering persisted, moving from one location to another. The festive atmosphere took a horrifying turn when multiple individuals opened fire into the crowd. In the chaos that ensued, Ryan Clemons and 51-year-old Pamela Whitson of Buena Vista Township were fatally wounded. Thirteen other people sustained injuries, either from the gunfire or from vehicles fleeing the chaotic scene.
The aftermath of the shooting revealed a grim scene, with investigators recovering shell casings from five different firearms, indicating the presence of multiple shooters. The Saginaw Police Department launched a full investigation into the mass shooting. In the immediate wake of the incident, two individuals were taken into custody for disorderly conduct, but authorities have not announced any arrests directly connected to the homicides of Ryan Clemons and Pamela Whitson. The investigation remains ongoing, and as of now, no suspects have been publicly identified or charged in connection with their deaths. The community continues to hope for justice as law enforcement encourages anyone with information to come forward.
