In the summer of 2023, the community of Big Rapids, Michigan, was shaken by the tragic death of Samantha Jo Houghton. A 33-year-old woman, Samantha's life was cut short on the night of July 22nd in what authorities would later describe as a devastating murder-suicide. She was a mother to four children and was seven months pregnant at the time of her death.
On that Saturday night, officers from the Big Rapids Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 1100 block of Catherine
Street after receiving reports of shots fired. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene. Inside the home, Samantha Houghton was found deceased. The children who were present in the home were thankfully physically unharmed.
Outside the residence, law enforcement found the body of 35-year-old Matthew Ottobre, who was identified as Samantha's boyfriend. The investigation into the incident suggested that a heated argument between the couple had escalated with tragic consequences. It is believed that Ottobre fatally shot Samantha before turning the weapon on himself, taking his own life at the scene.
As the suspect in Samantha's death was also deceased, there were no arrests made in connection with the case. The investigation concluded that Ottobre acted alone in the murder-suicide. The four children were placed in the care of family members, and the community rallied around them, setting up fundraisers to provide support in the wake of their profound loss.
