On the morning of August 28, 2022, police responded to reports of gunfire at the Bangor Downs Townhouses. Inside, they made a grim discovery: Bethany had been fatally shot. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that her two young sons, ages two and three, were present at the time of the incident.
Remembered for her bright smile and love for her children, Bethany was a devoted mother who enjoyed sharing her passion for books with her boys, often taking them to the library. She was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on December 23, 1994, and had a flair for makeup, beauty, and fashion, which she incorporated into her work at Cato. Her friends and family described her as a vibrant and caring individual with a sparkling personality.
The investigation into Bethany's death quickly identified a suspect: 18-year-old Lamar A. Davis of Midland, Michigan. When Bay County Sheriff's deputies entered the apartment and found Bethany, they were confronted by an armed Davis. According to authorities, Davis threatened the deputies, which led to a deputy fatally shooting him. Davis was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
In the wake of the violent encounter, the Michigan State Police took over the investigation. The deputy who shot Davis was placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure in such cases.
