In a tragic turn of events that left a community in shock, three-year-old Mikayla Walker lost her life on February 20, 2018, in what authorities determined to be a murder-suicide. The devastating incident unfolded in Bangor Township, near Bay City, Michigan, where Mikayla, her two-year-old brother Dariel Walker II, and their mother, 31-year-old Nikita Landrum, were discovered. Mikayla was a young girl who would have turned four in April of that year.
The grim discovery was made by an employee of the Bay County Drain Commission outside a maintenance center. Investigators found Mikayla and her mother inside a vehicle, while her younger brother was found outside the car. Law enforcement officials recovered a handgun at the scene. Autopsies later confirmed that both Mikayla and her brother died from single gunshot wounds to the head. Their mother, Nikita Landrum, also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The family was from Farmington Hills, over 100 miles away from where the incident occurred, and reportedly had no known connections to the Bay City area. Reports indicated that Landrum was involved in a custody dispute with the children's father, Dariel Walker. There was also a history of domestic issues between the parents.
Due to the nature of the incident, with the perpetrator also deceased, the case did not lead to any arrests or subsequent trials. The tragic event was ruled a murder-suicide by the Bay County Sheriff's Office, leaving a father to grieve the profound loss of his two young children.
