On May 5, 2024, 28-year-old May Hernandez was fatally shot alongside 41-year-old Hollie Stoops at a vacant home on 33rd Street near Michigan Avenue in Southwest Detroit. A 33-year-old man was also injured in the incident. The shootings occurred around 2 p.m. during Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the area.
