On a Sunday afternoon in early May, a violent altercation inside a Detroit home on 33rd Street tragically cut short the life of 28-year-old May Hernandez. On May 5, 2024, first responders arrived at the residence to a grim scene, finding Hernandez deceased from a gunshot wound to the head. Another woman, 41-year-old Hollie Stoops, was also found dead at the scene with gunshot wounds to her head and back. A third individual, a 33-year-old man, was discovered at the location with non-fatal gunshot wounds to his face and leg.
Investigators determined that the shooting stemmed from a dispute between Hernandez and 36-year-old Gabriel Kieshaun-Dajuan Toler of Taylor. Authorities report that during the altercation, Toler produced a handgun and fired multiple times before leaving the scene. The shooting, which occurred around 2 p.m. near Michigan Avenue in southwest Detroit, prompted a search for the suspect.
Nine days after the fatal shooting, Gabriel Kieshaun-Dajuan Toler was arrested in connection with the deaths of May Hernandez and Hollie Stoops. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has since charged Toler with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of assault with intent to murder, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and four counts of felony firearm. Toler was arraigned in 36th District Court and subsequently jailed.
