In the early hours of a summer morning in Detroit, Michigan, the life of 21-year-old Phillip Arnold Jr. was tragically cut short. On July 7, 2024, what began as a lively block party on Rossini Drive descended into chaos and violence, leaving a community in mourning. The gathering, attended by an estimated 350 people, was abruptly shattered around 2:25 a.m. by a barrage of gunfire. In the ensuing panic, Arnold was fatally wounded, one of two young lives lost in the incident.
A 20-year-old woman, Shanae Fletcher, was also killed, and nineteen other individuals, ranging in age from 16 to 24, sustained injuries in the mass shooting.
The investigation into the deadly event stretched on for months, leaving the families of the victims in a painful state of uncertainty. The Detroit Police Department, along with the Homicide Task Force and Gang Intelligence Unit, worked to piece together the events of that chaotic night. Investigators believed the shooting was gang-related and that specific individuals at the party were the intended targets. Surveillance footage captured a group of people wearing hoodies walking toward the party and later firing into the crowd. Despite the release of these images and a substantial reward offered for information, the suspects remained at large for a significant period, deepening the anguish of the victims' families.
A breakthrough in the case came in early 2025. On January 7, police arrested 19-year-old Demitrus Tiwan Shaw of Detroit in connection with the mass shooting. Shaw was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Phillip Arnold Jr. and Shanae Fletcher. In addition to the murder charges, he faced 19 counts of assault with intent to murder and 21 counts of felony firearm. Following his arraignment, Shaw was remanded to jail with a bond set at $1 million. While this arrest brought a measure of progress for the grieving families, authorities indicated that the investigation was ongoing as they believed others were involved in the tragic shooting.
