Following this altercation, a meeting was arranged outside a residence in Warren. It was during this gathering that Deandre Bernard Jones, the 32-year-old brother of Smith's girlfriend, is accused of driving to the location and shooting Smith Jr. The aftermath of the shooting led police to a grim discovery in a backyard in the 11000 block of Paige Avenue, where Smith Jr. was found deceased.
The investigation quickly pointed authorities to a nearby home on Jewett Avenue, resulting in a brief standoff with a barricaded individual. The primary suspect, Deandre Bernard Jones, was later apprehended at a different location, a residence in the 27000 block of Thomas Drive. In a further development, Jones's 30-year-old sister, Keshawna Smith, was also implicated in the case. She stands accused of attempting to conceal evidence by deleting text messages and call logs that were exchanged between her and her brother concerning the fatal shooting.
Deandre Bernard Jones is now facing serious charges, including second-degree murder, felony firearm, and solicitation of tampering with evidence. If he is convicted, the murder charge alone could result in a life sentence. The felony firearm charge carries a mandatory two-year sentence, and the charge of soliciting to tamper with evidence could add up to five more years to his sentence. Jones was denied bond during his arraignment. His sister, Keshawna Smith, has been charged with tampering with evidence, a felony that could lead to a prison sentence of up to ten years. She was given a bond of $50,000. Both siblings were scheduled for probable cause hearings on November 26, 2024, with their preliminary examinations set for December 3, 2024.
