On a late Sunday evening in Warren, Michigan, what began as a planned rendezvous for a marijuana deal descended into a fatal robbery, claiming the life of 23-year-old Danny Ray Richards. A Black/African American male, Richards was in the passenger seat of a 2005 Mercedes Benz on September 1, 2019, accompanying his aunt's boyfriend who had arranged the transaction in the parking lot of a Taco Bell on Eight Mile Road. Richards' sister was nearby in another car, awaiting them for a party they all planned to attend.
The two men they were scheduled to meet, Deonte Theodore Rice and Anthony Walker, had no intention of selling marijuana. Instead, they had orchestrated a robbery. Upon their arrival, they fired shots into the Mercedes, striking Richards. In the chaotic moments that followed, the wounded Richards managed to exit the vehicle and get into his sister’s car. She sped towards St. John Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
After the shooting, Rice and Walker pulled the driver from the Mercedes, robbing him of his Rolex watch before stealing the car and fleeing the scene. The stolen Mercedes was found an hour later, abandoned and burned in Detroit. The investigation gained momentum when the suspects attempted to sell the stolen Rolex at a pawn shop. Authorities, monitoring such transactions, were quickly able to identify and apprehend Rice and Walker.
The two men faced a litany of charges for their roles in the violent encounter. Deonte Theodore Rice was charged with felony murder, carjacking, armed robbery, and arson. Anthony Walker faced similar charges, including felony murder, carjacking, armed robbery, and additional firearm violations. Ultimately, Deonte Theodore Rice entered a plea of no contest to carjacking and armed robbery and was sentenced to a prison term of 23 to 60 years.
