In the early morning hours of November 14, 2024, a devastating series of events unfolded inside a family home on Jay Street in Midland, Michigan, culminating in the death of 33-year-old Quartez “Tezzy” Green, a Black male. The tragedy began around 6:55 a.m. when his younger brother, 28-year-old Brelawn Evans, reportedly woke up and physically assaulted his 21-year-old sister and then his 51-year-old mother.
Following the assault, both women managed to flee the residence and
immediately called 911 for help. They informed authorities that Green had remained in the house in an attempt to de-escalate the volatile situation with his brother. Tragically, his efforts were in vain. As the situation intensified, Green barricaded himself inside a room for safety. Evans, however, pursued him and fired a gun through the closed door, striking Green. He then reloaded the weapon and fired again. Quartez Green was shot multiple times and died from his injuries inside the home.
After the shooting, Evans fled the scene. Midland police, responding to the 911 call and another from a neighbor who spotted the suspect, located and arrested Evans without incident about two miles away near Waldo Avenue and Lambros Drive.
Brelawn Evans was subsequently charged with first-degree premeditated murder, felony firearm, and two counts of aggravated assault for the attacks on his mother and sister. He was arraigned and ordered held without bond in the Midland County Jail. During later court proceedings, testimony revealed that Evans admitted to shooting his brother. He claimed that an argument had occurred and that he felt his brother, who had stepped in to calm the initial dispute, was bullying and belittling him. A judge determined there was enough evidence for the case to proceed, and Evans was bound over to the Midland County Circuit Court for trial.
