On the night before Thanksgiving, November 23, 2016, Mehman Singh, a 31-year-old male, was working the late shift alone at the Log Cabin Party Store on the 500 Block of 4th Street in Jackson, Michigan. An immigrant from India who had come to the United States in search of a better life, he was known and well-liked within his community. His evening was violently disrupted when three men entered the store with the intent to rob it.
Two of the men went into the store while a third stood
watch at the door. One of the intruders, carrying a long gun, shot Singh in the neck. The assailants fled the scene, and despite being rushed to a local hospital, Mehman Singh succumbed to his injuries. The store owner later stated that the shooter did not even make a demand for money before firing the fatal shot.
In the wake of the homicide, the Jackson Police Department launched an investigation, releasing surveillance images of the suspects to the public in the hopes of generating leads. A reward was also offered for any information that would lead to the capture of the individuals responsible for Singh's death. However, despite these efforts, the case has grown cold. To date, no arrests have been made, and the three suspects involved in the attempted robbery and murder of Mehman Singh remain at large.
