The story of Dequan Javon Fields, a 27-year-old male, concluded in a heartbreaking discovery after he was reported missing on January 12, 2023. The initial sign of trouble was the discovery of his 2004 gold Dodge Durango, found abandoned and stained with blood at the Deal Island Wildlife Nature Preserve in Somerset County. This grim finding immediately suggested that Fields had met with foul play.
For months, the search for Dequan continued, with law enforcement and community members combing the area around where his vehicle was found. The investigation eventually focused on a suspect, William John Pruitt, a man with a significant criminal history. Police uncovered evidence showing that Pruitt and Fields, who were known to each other, were in contact shortly before Fields disappeared. Analysis of cell phone records tracked their phones moving together from Princess Anne to Marion Station.
A significant breakthrough in the case came when William John Pruitt was arrested on unrelated burglary charges.
