In the late hours of a March evening in 2023, tragedy struck in North Baltimore, forever altering the lives of a family and community. Micah Strong, a 26-year-old Black male, was fatally wounded in a shooting that also injured a 25-year-old woman. The incident unfolded in the 5400 block of York Road. Shortly after the shooting, at approximately 12:11 a.m. on March 24, 2023, both victims arrived at a local hospital seeking medical attention for multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Micah Strong succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The female victim was listed in stable condition.
The investigation into Micah Strong's death soon revealed a chilling connection to another violent crime that had occurred just 23 hours earlier. Detectives discovered that the shooting on York Road was linked to a mass shooting in the 2800 block of Edmondson Avenue, which resulted in the death of another man, Ernest Hall, and left five other individuals wounded. The link between the two brutal attacks was established through evidence that included the use of the same. 40 caliber handgun and a getaway car registered to the same individual.
The relentless work of the Baltimore Police Department led to a significant breakthrough in the case. On June 6, 2023, members of the Warrant Apprehension Task Force located and arrested 18-year-old Jabre Griffith at Dunbar High School without incident. Griffith was subsequently charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Micah Strong and Ernest Hall, in addition to six counts of attempted murder for the other victims. The investigation also implicated a co-defendant, Kamal Brown.
In November 2024, Jabre Griffith was found guilty of two counts of First-Degree Murder, six counts of Attempted Murder, and multiple firearm offenses. On February 18, 2025, a Baltimore City judge handed down a sentence of two life terms plus 120 years. The sentencing brought a measure of justice to the families of the victims, though the profound loss of Micah Strong continues to be felt by his loved ones.
