Fabian Alberto Sanchez Gonzalez, a 23-year-old male, was working his shift at a T-Mobile store in the Canton neighborhood of Baltimore on the evening of Sunday, April 30, 2023, when a violent robbery cut his life short. With less than half an hour left in his workday, two individuals entered the store located in the 2500 block of Boston Street and announced a robbery. During the commission of the crime, one of the suspects shot Gonzalez.
The assailants then proceeded to rob several customers in the store before fleeing the scene on foot. Emergency services were called, and Gonzalez was rushed to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The family of Fabian Gonzalez, including his mother Alma Rosa González and his brother, were left devastated by the sudden and violent loss of a young man they described as generous, caring, and dedicated to his family. He was remembered as a hard worker who was always looking out for his loved ones. The community shared in the family's grief, with customers and friends recalling his bright spirit and kindness. The Baltimore Police Department quickly launched an investigation. By reviewing surveillance footage from the T-Mobile store, detectives were able to capture still images of the suspects, which were then distributed to other law enforcement agencies. This crucial step led to a swift breakthrough in the case. A robbery detective from Baltimore County recognized one of the individuals in the photographs as 18-year-old Arthur McCaden. This identification was later corroborated by another person familiar with McCaden. Further investigation revealed that McCaden and his 14-year-old brother were also suspects in a robbery that had occurred at a Best Buy in New Jersey just hours before the fatal shooting in Baltimore.
On May 4, 2023, members of the Warrant Task Force located and arrested Arthur McCaden and his 14-year-old brother in the 5200 block of St. Charles Avenue without incident. Both were subsequently charged with first-degree murder. In May 2024, Arthur McCaden pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, five counts of armed robbery, and weapons-related charges. As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors recommended a sentence of life in prison with all but 60 years suspended. His sentencing was scheduled for October 16, 2024. Due to his status as a juvenile, details regarding the legal proceedings for the 14-year-old suspect have not been publicly disclosed.
