In the midst of a gathering on a summer afternoon in Baltimore, Maryland, a dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 27-year-old Jeremy Maldonado. On June 3, 2023, patrol officers in the vicinity of the 5900 block of Eastern Avenue heard gunshots at approximately 4:24 p.m. They discovered Maldonado suffering from multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
Another man, aged 29, was also shot during the incident but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a dispute that had occurred during the party. Witnesses stated that Maldonado had become highly intoxicated and was waving a firearm, leading to a confrontation. Shortly after the shooting, police located and arrested 36-year-old Jose Flomenco Reyes in the 400 block of Drew Street. Reyes was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Maldonado's death. He was initially accused of leaving the party after the altercation, retrieving an AR-15 rifle, and returning to open fire.
However, the case took a significant turn nearly a year later. In May 2024, the murder charges against Jose Flamenco-Reyes were dropped. A ballistics report and a review of the autopsy revealed that the bullets from the shotgun recovered from Flamenco-Reyes did not match the gunshot wounds that killed Maldonado. The evidence indicated that the actual murder weapon was a 9mm handgun. Consequently, the charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and first-degree assault against Flamenco-Reyes were dismissed. He ultimately pleaded guilty to possessing an unregistered short-barreled shotgun and was sentenced to time served.
