In the late hours of a Monday night in Salisbury, Maryland, the life of 34-year-old Keith Lamont Chaney, Sr. was tragically cut short. Just before 10 p.m. on July 31, 2023, officers from the Salisbury Police Department were dispatched to the Pemberton Manor Apartments on Fairground Drive following a 9-1-1 call reporting a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Chaney lying on the ground in front of the apartment complex, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel transported him to Tidal Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit took the lead in the ensuing investigation, with assistance from the Salisbury Police Department and Wicomico County Narcotics. Investigators began interviewing witnesses and residents in the area, piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting. The investigation revealed that a brief altercation had occurred between Chaney and another man. Following the dispute, Chaney drove away, but his assailant, Antonio Lamont Oliver, then 24, laid in wait, hiding behind a corner in a parking lot. When Chaney returned to the location, Oliver ambushed him, shooting him six times before fleeing the scene.
The investigation quickly led to two suspects. Two days after the shooting, police arrested 19-year-old Bisheri Damond Jacobs in Salisbury. He was charged with first- and second-degree murder, conspiracy, assault, and other related charges, and held without bond at the Wicomico County Detention Center. Shortly thereafter, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, with the help of the U.S. Marshal's Office, located and arrested Antonio Oliver in Philadelphia. Oliver was charged with first-degree murder and extradited back to Maryland to face trial.
In October 2024, a Wicomico County Circuit Court convicted Antonio Oliver of first-degree murder and numerous other related charges. On Thursday, January 16, 2025, a judge sentenced Oliver to life in prison plus an additional 30 years. Wicomico County State's Attorney Jamie Dykes stated that gun violence would not be tolerated and that her office and law enforcement partners would work tirelessly to ensure the safety of the community's neighborhoods.
