On a summer afternoon in Prince Frederick, Maryland, the life of 23-year-old Dakarai Nivek Milburn, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On July 31, 2023, at approximately 3:10 p.m., deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 1600 block of Mint Court in the Yardley Hills subdivision following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Milburn suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the deputies, Milburn was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the fatal shooting moved swiftly. Detectives on the scene quickly identified and apprehended a suspect, 28-year-old Anthony NMN Hill of Washington D.C. A handgun was also recovered at the location of the shooting. Authorities characterized the event as an isolated incident, reassuring the community that it was not a random act of violence. Hill was taken into custody and subsequently charged with a host of serious offenses, including First-Degree Murder and Second-Degree Murder, along with various handgun violations. He was held without bond pending further legal proceedings.
The legal process culminated on March 28, 2024, when Anthony Hill pleaded guilty in Calvert County Circuit Court. His plea was for Second-Degree Murder, Use of a Handgun in a Crime of Violence, and Unlawful Possession of a Regulated Firearm. This admission of guilt brought a significant development to the case that began on that tragic day in July. With his guilty plea, Hill faces a potential maximum sentence of 75 years of incarceration, with a mandatory minimum of five years to be served without the possibility of parole. His sentencing was scheduled to take place on July 1, 2024.
