In the quiet suburban landscape of Ellicott City, Maryland, a tragic and unsettling series of events unfolded, culminating in the death of 58-year-old Brian Robinette, a local pharmacist. On September 30, 2021, he and his wife, Kelly Sue Robinette, 57, were found shot to death in their home. The discovery launched a multi-state manhunt for the sole suspect in their murders, Brian's own brother.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly centered on Jeffrey Allen Burnham, then 46,
of Cumberland, Maryland. Concerns for the Robinettes' welfare arose after Burnham's mother contacted police with alarming statements he had made. He had expressed a desire to confront his pharmacist brother, espousing a belief that Brian was involved in 'poisoning people with the COVID shot.' This disturbing motive, rooted in misinformation surrounding the pandemic, appeared to be the driving force behind the violent acts that followed.
Before arriving at his brother's home in Ellicott City, authorities believe Burnham was responsible for the death of another individual. On September 29, 2021, 83-year-old Rebecca Reynolds, a friend of his mother's, was found dead in her Cumberland home, having sustained 'obvious trauma'. Burnham allegedly stole her car and drove to his brother's residence. After fatally shooting Brian and Kelly Robinette, he fled the scene in his brother's red Corvette.
The search for Burnham came to an end on October 1, 2021, when he was apprehended in West Virginia. He was found with the stolen Corvette pulled over on the side of a road, and a gun was recovered from inside the vehicle. Burnham was subsequently extradited to Maryland to face charges for the three murders.
In March 2022, a judge initially found Jeffrey Burnham incompetent to stand trial. However, by March 2023, a plea agreement was reached. Burnham pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his brother and sister-in-law. As part of the agreement, he was found not criminally responsible due to his mental state at the time of the killings. A judge sentenced him to indefinite confinement in a state psychiatric facility. He was also facing a separate trial for the murder of Rebecca Reynolds.
