In Ellicott City, Maryland, on an August afternoon in 2014, the life of 45-year-old Darren Friedman came to a tragic and violent end. Howard County Police officers were dispatched to his home on Coachlight Lane around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 20th, for a distressing call reported as a suicide in progress.
Upon their arrival, officers were confronted with a deeply concerning scene. Inside the residence, they discovered Mr.
Friedman in a bedroom, suffering from what appeared to be multiple serious stab wounds that authorities believed were self-inflicted. As two of the officers entered the room in an attempt to render aid, the situation escalated dramatically. Mr. Friedman, still armed with a knife, confronted the officers.
In the tense moments that followed, both officers discharged their firearms, striking Mr. Friedman. He was quickly transported by air to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Darren Friedman was pronounced dead at the hospital. The two police officers who fired their weapons were subsequently placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure in such incidents, pending the outcome of an internal investigation into the fatal shooting. The results of that investigation have not been made publicly available.
