In the quiet evening of November 8, 2023, the life of 24-year-old Anthony Day Roberts, a male resident of Camp Springs, Maryland, was tragically cut short. Just after a simple trip to a local 7-Eleven for snacks with his best friend, Roberts was gunned down in what authorities have described as an attempted robbery. The incident unfolded around 9:40 p.m. in the 6300 block of Auth Road, a residential area that was soon to become a scene of violence.
According to Roberts' mother, her son and his friend were walking home when they were confronted by two men in masks who demanded their belongings. When Roberts and his friend indicated they had nothing to give, they attempted to flee. It was then that the assailants opened fire, striking both men. Roberts was found by responding officers lying in the road with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
His friend also sustained injuries but thankfully, they were not considered life-threatening.
The investigation into the senseless killing of Anthony Day Roberts, who was a security guard and a devoted father to a one-year-old daughter, led to the swift arrest of three suspects from the nearby city of Suitland. Chanel Slaughter, 29, Deandre Wilson, 34, and Joseph Lewis, 36, were taken into custody and charged with a litany of serious offenses, including first- and second-degree murder and attempted murder. A preliminary investigation revealed that the victims and the suspects were not known to one another, suggesting a random act of violence that had a devastating and permanent conclusion. The three individuals charged in connection with the death of Anthony Day Roberts were being held at the county jail.
