On a Thursday evening, February 8, 2024, in Hyattsville, Maryland, the life of two-year-old Jeremy Poou-Caceres was tragically cut short. While on a walk with his mother, Rose Carceras, near the Bedford Station Apartments on Kanawha Street, they were caught in the crossfire of a shootout. The young boy was fatally wounded, and his mother sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident stemmed from a dispute between two groups, reportedly over drug distribution territory.
In the aftermath of the devastating event, law enforcement launched an intensive investigation that led to the arrests of multiple individuals. Among those taken into custody were 33-year-old Israel Fuentes Jr., 28-year-old Johnny Alejandro Turcios, and 25-year-old Nilson Granados-Trejo. Additionally, three teenagers, a 15-year-old from Takoma Park, a 16-year-old from Hyattsville, and a 17-year-old from Beltsville, were arrested and charged as adults in connection with the toddler's death.
The legal process saw several developments. One of the suspects, David Medina, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, pleaded guilty to his involvement, which included driving a stolen vehicle used in the incident. He later testified against Johnny Alejandro Turcios during his trial. In May 2025, a jury acquitted Turcios of the murder of Jeremy Poou-Caceres. However, he was found guilty on other charges, including attempted second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder against another individual at the scene, as well as illegal possession of a regulated firearm. The case against Nilson Granados-Trejo was reportedly dismissed due to a lack of evidence. The trial for another suspect, Israel Fuentes Jr., was scheduled for a later date.
