In the early evening of February 29, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of the 100 block of South Stockton Street in Baltimore. When the echoes faded, 38-year-old Bryant Davon Williams, a Black male, was left with a life-threatening gunshot wound. Emergency responders rushed him to a local hospital, but despite the efforts of medical professionals, Williams succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
His death was one of several violent incidents that marked the month of February in the city.
The Baltimore Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led them to 41-year-old Lionel Matthews. Investigators utilized security camera footage from the area to track down and identify Matthews as the suspected shooter. Video surveillance captured the tragic moments of the shooting and Williams' cries of agony after being shot.
Lionel Matthews was subsequently arrested and faced a jury trial. On February 7, 2025, a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder, firearm use in a violent crime, firearm possession with a prior felony conviction, and having a loaded handgun on his person. On April 22, 2025, a Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge sentenced Matthews to life in prison, plus an additional 30 years. During the emotional sentencing hearing, Williams' parents addressed the court, expressing the depth of their loss and their inability to forgive their son's killer, despite his apology. The proceedings were briefly interrupted when Williams' father, overcome with grief and anger, was escorted from the courtroom.
