In the quiet evening hours of March 23, 2024, a dispute in Adelphi, Maryland, tragically escalated, ending the life of 43-year-old Charles Dent of Hyattsville. Prince George's County Police were dispatched to the 1800 block of Metzerott Road around 6:45 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Dent outside, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate response, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to an argument between Dent and an acquaintance. Authorities identified 36-year-old Jamar Welch Sr. of Takoma Park as the suspect. More than a week after the fatal incident, Welch was apprehended in Washington, D.C. The preliminary investigation suggests that the two men knew each other and that the shooting occurred during their argument.
Following his arrest, Jamar Welch Sr. was charged with second-degree murder and other related offenses in connection with Charles Dent's death. He was awaiting extradition to Prince George's County to face these charges. Initially, a reward of up to $25,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case.
