In the quiet community of Aberdeen, Maryland, a tragic event unfolded that claimed the life of 54-year-old John C. Claytor. On April 15, 2024, first responders were called to the scene of a fire at the Highland Commons apartment complex. Inside one of the units, they made a grim discovery; the bodies of Claytor and two women, who were later identified as Melissa L. Williams, 45, and Talaya Danetha Wiley, 48.
The investigation quickly turned from a fire investigation to a triple homicide.
Authorities identified 35-year-old Michael Anthony Swan as a person of interest in the case. Swan was already wanted on an outstanding warrant from a shooting in Prince George's County that had occurred in February 2024, as well as federal warrants for parole violations. Recognizing the immediate threat he posed to the community, law enforcement began an intensive search for him. On the evening of April 23, surveillance teams located Swan in an apartment in Aberdeen. After a brief standoff, he was taken into custody.
Following his arrest, Michael Anthony Swan was charged with three counts of first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree arson, and reckless endangerment, among other charges. At the time of the murders, Swan was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. The arrest brought a measure of relief to the grieving families and the wider community, knowing that the man suspected of this violent act was no longer at large.
