On the evening of September 23, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the relative quiet in the 3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue in Mount Rainier, Maryland. When the sounds of the shots faded, 22-year-old Freiver Yanez-Salas, a male resident of Washington, D.C., was left dead. He was discovered inside a burgundy Jeep Commander, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Two other occupants of the vehicle, a man and a woman, were also struck by bullets.
They were rushed to a local hospital with critical injuries but were expected to survive.
The investigation into the triple shooting painted a grim picture of a drug transaction that turned deadly. According to authorities, Yanez-Salas and the other two victims were seated in the Jeep when they were approached by a man intent on purchasing marijuana. When the occupants of the vehicle informed him that they had none to sell, the man allegedly opened fire on them before fleeing the scene. The Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit took the lead on the case, meticulously gathering evidence to identify the person responsible for the brazen act of violence.
Utilizing surveillance footage from the area, detectives were able to identify a suspect. This identification was later confirmed when the surviving victims recognized the man from a photograph. The suspect was named as 39-year-old Louis Gregory of Brentwood. A search of the bedroom where Gregory was staying uncovered ammunition that was a match to the casings recovered by investigators at the scene of the shooting, further strengthening the case against him.
Following the investigation, Louis Gregory was arrested and taken into custody. He has been charged with first- and second-degree murder, in addition to other related charges. Gregory is currently being held at the Department of Corrections without bond as he awaits legal proceedings for his alleged role in the fatal shooting of Freiver Yanez-Salas and the wounding of two others. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
