In the quiet neighborhood of Mount Rainier, Maryland, the life of 16-year-old Dontae John Cook was tragically cut short on the evening of Friday, December 16, 2011. A junior at Northwestern High School, Dontae was known as a likable and easy-going young man who was actively preparing for college, taking on advanced courses like precalculus and AP world history. His friendly demeanor and active participation in class discussions left a positive mark on those who knew him.
Beyond his academic pursuits, he was a passionate athlete, making his presence felt on the football field for the Hyattsville/Mount Rainier/Brentwood Boys and Girls Club, where he earned the 'Unsung Hero' award for his dedication.
The fateful evening unfolded in the hallway of an apartment building in the 4600 block of 25th Street. Around 7:36 p.m., Mount Rainier patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Dontae suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after. The young man, who resided on Upshur Street, was just a half-mile from his home when he was fatally wounded. The news of his sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through the community, leaving his family, friends, and classmates to grapple with an immense loss.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit launched an immediate and intensive investigation. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of a suspect. On December 17, 2011, the day after the shooting, police arrested 24-year-old Eric Jerome Brown of Washington, D.C. The arrest was made with the assistance of the Metropolitan Police Department and the United States Secret Service. Brown was taken into custody and subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Dontae's death. He was held at the D.C. jail, awaiting extradition to Prince George's County to face the charges brought against him.
