In the late hours of a Friday in Racine, Wisconsin, the life of 29-year-old Cassandra Sims, a Black female, was tragically cut short. On August 11, 2023, Sims, a beloved daycare owner, was at her home with her young son when she was shot and killed. The incident unfolded in what authorities have described as a murder-suicide.
The perpetrator was identified as Sims's 30-year-old boyfriend, Deandre Martin.
After fatally shooting Sims, Martin then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life. The horrific event was witnessed by Sims's then three-year-old son, who bravely ran to a neighbor's house to seek help. When police arrived at the residence near Drexel Avenue and Gillen Street, they found both Sims and Martin deceased inside.
