Lhazmon McCain, 36, was a Black/African American man who was found shot to death in the early hours of January 20, 2023. Officers responded to reports of gunfire at a home in the 700 block of Northeast 32nd Street just before 2:30 a.m. and discovered McCain inside the residence, having been shot several times. Witnesses told investigators that an argument inside the house escalated, one person grabbed a gun, and shots were fired; McCain did not survive and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities also reported that McCain’s dog was killed during the incident.
In the days after the killing, police described the case as an active homicide investigation and said the shooter fled the scene before officers arrived. Investigators notified the victim’s next of kin and asked anyone with information to contact the homicide tip line. The community followed updates as the Oklahoma City Police Department worked the case, gathering witness interviews and pursuing leads.
A tip to Crime Stoppers eventually led law enforcement to a suspect. In late January 2023, Oklahoma City officers, with assistance from the United States Marshals Service, arrested 42-year-old Mark Maurice Stewart. He was booked into the Oklahoma County Jail on a complaint of first-degree murder in connection with the January 20 shooting. Officials said the arrest resulted from investigative work and the tip; as of those reports, charges were lodged and the case was moving through the criminal-justice process.
