In the small town of Frederick, Oklahoma, the life of 35-year-old Jake Omar Zuniga was tragically cut short on October 18, 2023. That morning, just after 11:00 a.m., Frederick police officers were dispatched to a residence near South 19th Street and East Dahlia Avenue following a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Zuniga suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify a suspect, 44-year-old Michael Lee Lorah. Lorah was taken into custody at the scene and was initially booked into the Tillman County Jail on a charge of possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction. As the investigation by the Frederick Police Department and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation progressed, more serious charges were anticipated.
In the wake of Zuniga's death, details of his life emerged, painting a picture of a beloved member of the community. Born in Frederick on October 21, 1987, he was a 2005 graduate of Frederick High School where he had been a standout athlete in football, baseball, and wrestling. He was known for his love of the Dallas Cowboys and, most importantly, for the deep love he had for his family and friends. He is survived by his partner, two daughters, his parents, and several siblings.
The legal proceedings against Michael Lee Lorah moved forward, and in May 2024, a preliminary hearing was held where a judge ordered him to stand trial. Subsequently, Lorah pleaded guilty to first-degree murder with deliberate intent and possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction, bringing a measure of legal closure to the case nearly two years after Zuniga's untimely death.
