On the night of March 30, 2024, Jose Garcia-Reyes, a 33-year-old Hispanic/Latino man, was sitting in a pickup truck with another man, Luis Garcia, in a Tulsa mobile home park. It was just after 11 p.m. when an argument broke out because their truck was blocking a narrow street near East Admiral Place and 121st East Avenue. The dispute over the stopped vehicle grew louder, drawing the attention of neighbors.
According to police and witness accounts, the confrontation escalated when a
young man from a nearby home, 22-year-old Elwyn Lopez, came outside. As the argument continued, Lopez approached the pickup truck where Jose and Luis remained. Police stated that Lopez then drew a firearm and fired multiple shots into the cab of the truck, turning a neighborhood quarrel into a fatal encounter.
When Tulsa police officers responded to calls about a shooting, they found the pickup still parked in the middle of the street. Inside, they discovered both Jose and Luis Garcia, who had died from their gunshot wounds. One victim was in the driver's seat, and the other was in the back seat. The scene was quickly secured as detectives began their investigation.
Investigators spoke with multiple witnesses at the mobile home park who had seen or heard the altercation. Their statements consistently described a man coming out of a nearby residence just before the gunfire erupted. These accounts allowed police to quickly identify Elwyn Lopez as the suspect. He was located and arrested shortly thereafter.
Lopez was charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Jose Garcia-Reyes and Luis Garcia. In January 2026, his case went to trial. A jury convicted Elwyn Lopez on both counts of first-degree murder for the fatal shootings. Following the guilty verdict, the jury recommended a sentence of life imprisonment. Lopez was awaiting a formal sentencing hearing as of January 2026.
