In the early morning hours of May 22, 2024, the sound of gunfire shattered the peace at the Will Rogers Courts apartment complex in Oklahoma City, leaving a family devastated and a community on edge. Anthony Hines, a 38-year-old Black male, was found deceased just outside an apartment at 1450 Westwood Boulevard, the victim of a fatal shooting. Another individual was also wounded in the incident but survived after receiving medical treatment.
The tragic events unfolded as Hines was
celebrating a relative's graduation. A festive gathering turned into a scene of violence when a group of uninvited individuals arrived. An argument broke out between Hines and one of the newcomers, quickly escalating to the point where shots were fired. Hines was struck as he tried to get away from the confrontation. The motive for the shooting appears to be rooted in gang-related tensions that had been plaguing the housing complex.
The investigation into Hines' death led to the apprehension of two suspects. The first, 18-year-old Doneto Patrick Jr., who also went by the name 'Psycho,' was taken into custody on May 30, 2024. Witnesses were initially hesitant to come forward out of fear, as Patrick was allegedly part of a gang that had been intimidating residents. Nearly four months later, on September 17, 2024, a second suspect, 19-year-old Michael Jean Williams, was also arrested in connection with the homicide. Both Patrick and Williams are facing charges of first-degree murder.
The death of Anthony Hines was part of a disturbing string of violence in the area, with two other homicides occurring in close proximity within a short period. This raised concerns among law enforcement and residents about a potential escalation of related shootings.
