On the evening of October 13, 2024, a day that began with a peaceful walk on a beach and watching the sunset on Vashon Island, ended in tragedy for 53-year-old Oton Garcia Ruiz, a Hispanic man. He and his girlfriend, Maria Cervantes, were on their way home and made a stop at Shree's Truck Stop gas station in Seattle's Highland Park neighborhood to buy a drink. What should have been a brief, mundane stop shattered their lives in an instant.
While Garcia Ruiz sat in his car waiting to get gas, an eruption of gunfire pierced the air.
Cervantes, who was inside the station, heard four gunshots and rushed out to a horrifying scene. She found the man she had just shared a beautiful day with, shot inside his vehicle. Despite the immediate arrival of police and the Seattle Fire Department, who administered medical aid, Garcia Ruiz succumbed to a gunshot wound to the torso at the scene. The Seattle Police Department later described the shooting as a reckless act, with the shooter firing multiple shots into the crowded gas station with a complete disregard for the safety of the patrons. This violent act marked the sixth non-vehicular homicide in West Seattle for the year.
In the days that followed the senseless killing, the community mourned the loss of a man remembered as kind, respectful, and passionate about the outdoors. The youngest of six siblings, Garcia Ruiz had come to the United States to build a better life for himself. He and his fiancée were avid hikers and belonged to a Latino hiking club. On October 18, loved ones gathered for a vigil at the gas station, a place of profound sorrow, to honor his memory and plead for justice. The investigation pressed on, and police released security camera images of a man they believed to be involved in the homicide.
The public's help proved crucial. On October 28, a 26-year-old warehouse worker, recognized by his co-workers from the distributed images, turned himself in to the authorities at the Seattle Police Department Headquarters. The investigation revealed that the shooting was preceded by a fight at the gas station that did not involve Garcia Ruiz, who appeared to be an entirely random victim. The suspect allegedly fired the shots from a car after leaving the station. Following his surrender, the man was booked into the King County Jail. On October 31, murder charges were filed against the suspect, identified as Duran, bringing a measure of progress in the quest for justice for Oton Garcia Ruiz.
