On February 12, 2023, at approximately 5:54 a.m., Columbus police responded to a report of a shooting in the 5000 block of Red Bird Court, located in an apartment complex off Noe-Bixby Road just north of East Livingston Avenue on the East Side of Columbus, Ohio. Upon arrival, officers found 30-year-old Nathaniel Spears lying unresponsive in a grassy area in front of the location.
Spears was transported to Mount Carmel East hospital in critical condition.
Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced deceased at 6:22 a.m., less than 30 minutes after the initial report.
Initial investigations by Columbus police homicide detectives revealed that Spears and the shooter were involved in some type of altercation which led to the shooting. The shooter, whom police referred to as a suspect but did not identify, claimed to have acted in self-defense.
As of the time of the reports, no arrests had been made in connection with Spears' death. The completed investigation by detectives was to be forwarded to the Franklin County Prosecutor's office, which would decide whether to present the case to a grand jury.
The case has drawn attention to recent changes in Ohio law regarding self-defense claims. In 2021, Ohio passed a law expanding the right of a person to stand their ground and not retreat from a confrontation almost anywhere they are legally allowed to be. This has led to increased scrutiny of self-defense claims in cases like Spears'.
