Investigations revealed that prior to the shooting, Lawless had broken Barnhorst's car window with a bat, leading him to exit his vehicle and shoot her. Initially charged with voluntary manslaughter, Barnhorst later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of reckless homicide. In March 2024, he was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison, a decision that sparked significant controversy and dissatisfaction among Lawless's family and community members.
