On July 6, 2023, Isis LeShay Roseman, a 26-year-old pregnant woman from Cincinnati, Ohio, tragically lost her life in a senseless act of violence. Roseman and her younger brother were playing with laser pointers in the front yard of their home on Kings Run Court in the Winton Hills neighborhood when they were approached by Tyrone Hunter, who initiated a verbal altercation over the laser pointers.
Hunter, aged 25 at the time, threatened to "shoot up" Roseman's home before leaving the scene. He returned shortly after and opened fire on the residence. Roseman and her family ran inside, but Hunter fired a second round of shots. During this attack, Roseman was struck by at least one bullet that traveled through her window. Emergency services rushed her to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries. The Hamilton County Coroner's Office later determined that Roseman was 16 to 17 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.
Tyrone Hunter was indicted by a Hamilton County grand jury on multiple charges, including two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, one count of improper discharge of a firearm into a habitation, and one count of having weapons while under disability. At the time of the shooting, Hunter was out on a $10,000 bond for previous felony charges, including felonious assault, improper discharge of a firearm, and drug trafficking.
On July 24, 2023, Hunter turned himself in to law enforcement and was held at the Hamilton County Justice Center on a $1 million bond. In a subsequent development, Hunter pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of discharge of a firearm on or in a prohibited area. On June 4, 2024, a Hamilton County Common Pleas Court judge sentenced Hunter to 20 to 30 1/2 years in a state correctional facility for the slaying of Isis LeShay Roseman and her unborn child.
The case sparked controversy regarding the justice system, with Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers criticizing the low bond that allowed Hunter to be free at the time of the shooting. Powers stated, "This is absurd. Criminals must be kept off the streets and remain accountable for their crimes. This guy took two lives by killing a pregnant victim while out on a $10,000 bond". The victim's mother, Trissa Green, expressed her feelings about the sentence, saying it didn't seem harsh enough for the loss of her daughter and unborn grandchild.
