Jaijuan Jenkins, a 19-year-old Black man remembered by friends as sweet, smart, and funny, was known to many by his nickname, "Juan Juan." He lived in Columbus, Ohio, where his life was cut short in the summer of 2023.
On the evening of August 15, 2023, Columbus Police received a call about a residence in the 4600 block of Refugee Road. A dispatcher sent officers at approximately 7:07 p.m. to investigate a report of a front door left wide open with a body visible inside.
The officers entered the home and found Jaijuan Jenkins suffering from gunshot wounds. Medics were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:17 p.m.
Investigators who responded to the apartment spoke with witnesses who identified a suspect. According to court documents that were later filed, Jaijuan and the suspect had been involved in a dispute before the shooting. Based on the information gathered, police identified 18-year-old Jaylon Wilson as the person responsible for Jaijuan’s death. A warrant charging Wilson with murder was issued for his arrest on August 24.
The search for Wilson ended on September 12, 2023, when authorities located and arrested him out of state. He was extradited back to Ohio and booked into the Franklin County Jail. On September 30, Wilson was arraigned in court, and a judge set his bond at just over $200,000.
In a subsequent proceeding in Franklin County court, Jaylon Wilson pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for the shooting death of Jaijuan Jenkins. His plea brought a conclusion to the criminal case.
