J’Vontia Cassell was 25 years old when the night in Columbus gave way to the small hours of Sunday, September 21, 2025. Police were sent to the 1100 block of North High Street in the Short North on a report of a disturbance just before 2:45 a.m.; as officers arrived, gunfire cracked through the crowd. They found Cassell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and rushed him to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he was pronounced just after 5 a.m.
