On August 26, 2023, at approximately 2:23 p.m., 19-year-old Nathaniel Akua-Kyree Joe-Summerall was fatally shot near a Dairy Queen located in the 1500 block of Schrock Road in Columbus, Ohio. Officers arrived to find Joe-Summerall suffering from a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:32 p.m. A second individual, later identified as 19-year-old Kiyaire Blow, arrived at Riverside Methodist Hospital with gunshot injuries sustained during the same incident.
Investigations revealed that Joe-Summerall, Blow, and several others had gathered in the parking lot for what appeared to be a planned meeting. An altercation ensued, leading to the exchange of gunfire. On August 29, 18-year-old Mehki Lewis was arrested and charged with murder in connection to Joe-Summerall's death. The following day, Blow was also charged with murder after being identified as a participant in the shooting.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of three juveniles—two 14-year-olds and one 17-year-old—each charged with murder for their alleged involvement. By September 6, all five suspects were in custody.
Born on July 19, 2004, in Columbus, Joe-Summerall graduated from Thomas Worthington High School and was employed at Amazon. He had plans to attend Columbus State Community College in the fall. A celebration of his life was held on September 9 at Newcomer Funeral Home in Columbus.
In the wake of his passing, Joe-Summerall's family organized a fundraiser to assist with funeral expenses, highlighting the unexpected nature of his death and the financial challenges it presented.
