On August 22, 2023, at approximately 3:20 p.m., Trotwood police responded to a two-vehicle crash near Olive Road and Hoover Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered that both drivers, 38-year-old Antonio Heard and 44-year-old Crystal Lugo, had sustained gunshot wounds in addition to injuries from the collision. Both individuals were transported to Miami Valley Hospital, where Lugo was pronounced dead later that afternoon, and Heard succumbed to his injuries on August 24.
Investigations revealed that Heard and Lugo were acquainted, leading authorities to treat the incident as a domestic dispute that escalated fatally. Trotwood police indicated that the crash appeared to be an intentional act, suggesting the possibility of a murder-suicide. However, they have not confirmed this theory, stating only that no other individuals were involved.
Lugo was employed in the mailroom at the Dayton Correctional Institution. In response to her death, the institution provided support services for staff and inmates and planned a memorial in her honor for September. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction extended condolences to Lugo's family, friends, and coworkers during this difficult time.
As both individuals involved are deceased, Trotwood police have not pursued further arrests or identified additional suspects. The case remains under investigation, with authorities continuing to gather information to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
