On July 29, 2023, at approximately 4:10 a.m., 28-year-old Melchizedec D. Israel-Miller was fatally shot in the head during a large gathering in the parking lot of the DeSoto Bass public housing complex in Dayton, Ohio. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old James Christopher Hughes, was reportedly a close friend of Israel-Miller. According to court documents, Hughes became angry with another individual at the gathering, drew a firearm, and shot Israel-Miller in the head.
After the shooting, Hughes allegedly took items from Israel-Miller's pocket, commandeered a vehicle at gunpoint, and fled the scene. Israel-Miller was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, a warrant was issued for Hughes' arrest. He was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Springfield, Ohio, in early September 2023. Hughes was indicted on charges including two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault (each with three-year firearm specifications), and one count of having weapons while under disability due to a prior offense of violence.
In October 2023, Hughes pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, tampering with evidence, and having weapons while under disability. He was sentenced to 20 to 25.5 years in prison.
Melchizedec D'Solomon Yisrael, born on September 6, 1994, in Dayton, was remembered as a devoted father and family member. He is survived by his parents, Meged and Migdawlaw Yisrael; his children, Melchizedec, Menellik, Malachi, Makeda Moriyah, and Melani; and several siblings. Funeral services were held on August 9, 2023, at H. H. Roberts Mortuary, with entombment at Woodland Mausoleum.
The tragic death of Israel-Miller has deeply affected his family and the Dayton community, highlighting the devastating impact of violence and the importance of addressing its root causes.
