On July 29, 2023, at approximately 4:10 a.m., 28-year-old Melchizedec D. Israel-Miller was fatally shot in the head during a large gathering in the parking lot of the DeSoto Bass public housing complex in Dayton, Ohio. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old James Christopher Hughes, was reportedly a close friend of Israel-Miller.
