On September 20, 2023, 17-year-old Imperial Stewart was reported missing from the North Linden area of Columbus, Ohio. His disappearance was under suspicious circumstances, prompting an immediate investigation. Nearly two weeks later, on October 3, Stewart's body was discovered in a wooded area near Sunbury and Agler roads in northeast Columbus.
The investigation revealed that Stewart had left his home around 5:45 p.m.
on September 20, entering a black Chrysler 300 with 18-year-old Mi'Quel Bowles and at least one other male. He informed his mother that he was going to sell shoes at a store on Huy Road. Approximately two hours later, Columbus police responded to a shooting on North Dawson Avenue, where they found Mi'Quel Bowles with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Grant Medical Center but was uncooperative with detectives.
Further investigation revealed that Stewart had been involved in a transaction to purchase a firearm from 20-year-old Michael Bowles, Mi'Quel's brother. During the exchange, a 16-year-old male, identified as "J," attempted to rob Stewart, leading to a struggle. Michael Bowles allegedly shot Stewart during the altercation, with one of the bullets also injuring Mi'Quel. Following the incident, Michael Bowles reportedly disposed of Stewart's body and sought assistance from family members to eliminate evidence, including burning the Chrysler 300 used during the crime.
As a result of the investigation, multiple individuals were charged:
- **Michael Bowles**, 20: Indicted on charges including aggravated murder, murder, aggravated robbery, abuse of a corpse, and having a weapon under disability.
- **Mi'Quel Bowles**, 19: Pleaded guilty to obstructing justice and was sentenced to three years in prison.
- **A 16-year-old male**: Charged with murder, robbery, and obstructing justice.
- **Tywisha Peterson**, 40 (mother of Michael and Mi'Quel): Charged with obstructing justice.
- **Genee Dumas**, 41: Charged with obstruction of official business, tampering with evidence, and resisting arrest.
- **A 17-year-old female**: Charged with obstruction of official business, tampering with evidence, and resisting arrest.
- **Michael R. Bowles Jr.**, 37: Pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence.
- **Raymor Dumas**, 44: Pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of criminal mischief after initially being charged with obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence.
