On November 16, 2023, Laura Colon, a 62-year-old property manager of Mentor Green Mobile Estates in Willoughby, Ohio, was tragically shot and killed during a violent incident that unfolded in the mobile home park. The Mentor Police Department received a 911 call reporting shots fired around 4:30 PM. Upon arrival, officers found Colon deceased in the roadway, having suffered fatal gunshot wounds. Nearby, another victim, Terrance Mathis Sr., aged 63, was found with serious injuries and later succumbed to his wounds at the hospital. An additional victim, Thomas Galizia, aged 81, was also found dead at the scene. A fourth victim, Charles Skala, aged 63, was injured but survived and was taken to the hospital where he is in stable condition.
The shooter was identified as Jason Norris, a 47-year-old resident of the mobile home park who was reportedly facing eviction. Witnesses indicated that an altercation occurred between Norris and Colon shortly before the shooting began. Armed with two handguns, Norris opened fire on Colon and others who attempted to assist her. After the shooting, he retreated to his mobile home unit where he remained barricaded as police arrived.
In response to the ongoing threat, multiple SWAT teams were deployed to the scene, and neighboring residents were evacuated for their safety. The situation escalated into a standoff lasting several hours. Efforts by the Mentor Police Hostage Negotiation Team to communicate with Norris were unsuccessful. Eventually, around 8:15 PM, a tactical drone was sent into his unit where he was found with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Following this discovery, SWAT teams entered the unit and confirmed his death.
The investigation into this tragic event is being handled by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The community has been deeply affected by this senseless act of violence, with local officials expressing condolences to the families of all victims involved.
