On the evening of April 14, 2024, 13-year-old Angel Salguero Diaz, a Hispanic male, was shot and killed in the North Linden area of Columbus, Ohio. Around 8:35 p.m., a ShotSpotter alert registered gunfire near Medina Avenue and East Hudson Street, but when police responded, they found no evidence of a shooting. About two hours later, at approximately 10:15 p.m., officers were called back to the area on a report of a body.
They discovered Angel unresponsive in an alley behind homes on the 1300 block of East Hudson Street. He had been shot in the back and was pronounced dead at the scene when medics arrived.
In the days following the shooting, the Columbus Police Department asked for the public’s help, specifically seeking information about a Ford Escape whose occupants may have witnessed events related to Angel’s death. The killing saddened and concerned local residents. Marie Walker, who had lived in the neighborhood for 53 years, heard the gunshots and saw the emergency response. "My heart goes out to their parents and that's a child," she said. "I love kids and all the kids around here, I call them my children. And that was my child that died."
Investigators uncovered video evidence from the area that showed a muzzle blast coming from a moving SUV. This was consistent with ShotSpotter data that recorded the sound of gunfire traveling at about 15 miles per hour. The evidence led police to 20-year-old Jaivon Jones, who was arrested on June 28, 2024, and charged with murder. According to court records, Jones admitted to detectives that he was driving the vehicle at the scene but denied that he or anyone else inside had fired a weapon. At a court hearing, Angel's brother, Brian Salguero Diaz, spoke about his family's loss, stating, "Killing a 13-year-old don't make you gangster."
The investigation continued, and several months later, a second suspect was arrested. On October 24, 2024, police took 21-year-old Dock Parker into custody and also charged him with murder in connection with Angel's death.
The case against Jaivon Jones moved forward in the legal system. On January 5, 2026, Jones pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter. A month later, on February 5, 2026, Franklin County Common Pleas Court Judge Mark Serrott sentenced Jones to 12 to 14 years in prison. As of February 2026, this sentencing was the latest development in the case.
