On October 9, 2024, at approximately 1:57 a.m., the Bay Village Police Department received a 911 call from Erica Wandzel, who reported that she had shot her roommate, 40-year-old Anthony James Hein. Emergency responders arrived at the residence on Bassett Road, where Hein was pronounced dead at 2:07 a.m.
In the 911 call, Wandzel stated that Hein had been attacking her throughout the night, prompting her to shoot him in self-defense.
She expressed fear that Hein might attempt to seize the gun, which led her to seek refuge at a neighbor's house.
Following the incident, Wandzel was taken into custody and evaluated by paramedics. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation processed the scene, and the findings were submitted to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office. After reviewing the case, the Prosecutor's Office decided not to file charges against Wandzel.
Hein had a history of legal issues, including multiple incidents involving assault and failure to comply with law enforcement. In 2014, he pleaded guilty to domestic violence charges.
Anthony James Hein, born on October 15, 1983, was remembered as a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend. He had a passion for riding his Harley and working on cars, and was known for his generous spirit and sharp wit. He is survived by his parents, siblings, nephews, and other cherished family members and friends.
