In the predawn hours of May 28, 2023, a family gathering in North Las Vegas took a tragic turn, ending in the death of 32-year-old Demarkie Montez. The male victim was at a barbecue with family members on Honey Vista Lane when an argument erupted between him and his older brother, Marcus Montez.
The verbal altercation escalated with tragic finality. Shortly before 4:45 a.m., gunshots shattered the quiet of the neighborhood.
Witnesses reported hearing the shots and seeing a car speed away from the scene. North Las Vegas police responded to calls and discovered that Demarkie Montez had been shot. He was rushed to University Medical Center, but ultimately succumbed to gunshot wounds to his back.
In the ensuing investigation, suspicion fell upon Demarkie’s brother. A witness identified Marcus Montez as the shooter. Approximately two months after the incident, Marcus, age 33, was arrested and charged with the murder of his younger brother. This was not Marcus Montez's first encounter with the law regarding a violent family dispute; records indicated he had a previous conviction for the 2007 killing of his stepfather, for which he had pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter with a deadly weapon. Following his arrest for his brother's death, he was booked into the Clark County Detention Center and held without bail.
