Rizza Bautista Abrera was a 38-year-old Filipino-American woman living in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the mother of four children. She owned a nail salon in the Las Vegas area and was remembered by relatives and friends as a hardworking mother who devoted much of her life to supporting her children. Online memorial information says she was born in the Philippines on January 12, 1985, later made her home in Las Vegas, and pursued a variety of interests and jobs before becoming a business owner.
Her death grew out of a violent confrontation with her former boyfriend, Steven Robert Evans, and was ultimately investigated by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police as a murder-suicide.
On the evening of June 15, 2023, Abrera was at a nail salon when Evans arrived and forcibly removed her from the business. Reports describing the incident say witnesses saw Evans grab her and force her outside. When people attempted to intervene, he was reportedly armed with a firearm. Abrera was then forced into a vehicle and driven away. Witnesses were able to provide authorities with information about the vehicle, including its license plate, which helped police trace it to a residence on Scrub Jay Court in the southwest Las Vegas Valley, near Fort Apache Road and Sunset Road.
When officers arrived at the residence, the kidnapping developed into a barricade and hostage situation. Police learned that Evans was inside with Abrera, their young child, and two other women. Authorities believed Evans had access to multiple firearms. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police deployed SWAT personnel, and negotiators spent hours attempting to resolve the standoff. During the operation, one woman and the child were brought out of the residence safely. Another woman was later found unharmed after apparently taking refuge in a bathroom.
After SWAT officers ultimately entered and searched the home, they found Abrera unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Evans was discovered in an upstairs room suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators subsequently determined that Evans had killed Abrera and then shot himself. Authorities described Evans' fatal wound as self-inflicted. Although some early reports did not immediately disclose Abrera's precise cause of death, later accounts characterized the incident as a fatal shooting and a murder-suicide.
The incident appears to have occurred against a broader history of turmoil between Abrera and Evans. Later reporting focused on the case as an example of intimate-partner violence. Abrera's relatives said Evans had been abusive during their relationship and that the family had pursued a restraining order against him. Court-related reporting indicated that some of the records involving the couple were sealed, limiting the amount of publicly available information about the proceedings. One later account based on court information reported that Evans previously had been charged in cases involving burglary, attempted murder with a deadly weapon and domestic violence, but that those charges were dismissed in November 2022. Because Evans shared his name with another Las Vegas-area man with a criminal record, some later researchers cautioned that not every record associated with the name Steven or Stephen Evans could reliably be attributed to the man involved in Abrera's death.
No arrest was made for Abrera's kidnapping or killing because Evans, the person police identified as her abductor and killer, died during the same incident. As a result, there was no subsequent murder prosecution, criminal trial or conviction connected with her death. Police homicide detectives investigated the circumstances and concluded that Evans killed Abrera before taking his own life, making him the only publicly identified suspect in the homicide. The other people found inside the residence were treated as victims or witnesses rather than suspects, and available reporting does not identify anyone else as having been arrested, charged or accused of participating in Abrera's killing.
Abrera's death left four children without their mother and prompted her relatives to speak publicly about domestic violence and the importance of recognizing dangerous patterns before they become fatal. Family members described her as ambitious, energetic and focused on giving her children opportunities, including plans to travel with them. Friends organized fundraising after her death to help with funeral expenses, her business and support for her youngest child. Funeral and memorial services were held later that month in Las Vegas. Although some memorial records list June 16 as her date of death, contemporary reports of the kidnapping and police response place the fatal incident on the night of June 15, with the confrontation extending into the ensuing police operation.
