On August 17, 2023, 34-year-old Marillorky Tamayo-Cruz was fatally shot in her parents' Las Vegas apartment by her estranged husband, 38-year-old Roidan Durruthy-Mendoza. Earlier that day, Tamayo-Cruz had been awarded custody of their two daughters, aged 14 and 2, as well as possession of the family home and vehicle, during divorce proceedings.
